How did Agilent Technologies Become Two Distinct Companies Form One?

In 1999, Agilent Technologies was incorporated as an independent spin off from the Hewlett-Packard Company’s test and measurement divisions. Agilent’s initial public offering, the largest ever at the time, raised $2.1 billion. The company specialized in test and measurement components, chemical analysis and medical businesses, and computing and imaging. In 2013, Agilent announced that the company will split into two companies, one focusing on the life sciences, diagnostics, and applied markets (LDA) businesses and the other focusing on the electronic measurement (EM) business. The former retained the Agilent name and the latter was renamed Keysight Technologies. Keysight will operate as a subsidiary of Agilent beginning 2014. Agilent’s total revenues for the 2013 fiscal year was $6.8 billion, the bulk of which came from the EM business group, which made $2.9 billion.

Agilent’s EM business (Keysight) designs and manufactures electronic measurement systems and instruments used in applications including wireless communications, microwave, voice, broadband, data, and fiber optic networks. Their product portfolio includes Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software, vector and signal analyzers, signal generators, vector network analyzers, one box testers, oscilloscopes, logic and protocol analyzers, and bit-error ratio testers. The company has a wide range of solutions for the aerospace & defense industries including products for radar & electronic warfare testing, military communications, satellites, signals intelligence (SIGINT), avionics, guidance, navigation, GPS, ATE (automatic test equipment) applications, and operational testing.
