The Alenia Aermacchi M-311, now referred to as the M-345, is a military trainer aircraft that is currently under development by Alenia Aermacchi, which is now Leonardo S.p.A. The M-311 is a development of the SIAI Marchetti S.211, which Aermacchi acquired the rights to in 1997 to develop an improved version. As compared to the S.211, the M-311 model would present a more advanced cockpit, structural improvements with composites, and a new powerplant. With these changes, the M-311 would tout an increased fatigue life, also leading to longer intervals in between maintenance. As the M-345, the aircraft has had its maiden flight in 2018, and is expected to enter service under the Italian Air Force during 2020.
