A NATO Stock Number, or National Stock Number as it is known in the US, is a unique series of numbers issued by the Defense Logistics Agency for the purpose of categorization and classification of goods procured and used on a regular basis by federal entities. The Defense Logistics Agency is responsible for all logistical support to US military agencies, including the weapons acquisition, repair parts, and other materials. This agency issues and regulates these standardized codes, which are recognized by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the US Department of Defense. The National Stock Number is a unique 13-digit number consisting of a 4-digit Federal Supply Classification Group (FSCG) and a 9-digit National Item Identification Number (NIIN). The FSCG is further subcategorized into a 2-digit Federal Supply Group (FSG) and a 2-digit Federal Supply Code (FSC). The 9-digit NIIN is further divided into a 2-digit National Codification Bureau (NCB), which usually signifies country of origin, and a unique 7-digit item number.
