Functionality of Grommets

Grommets are a type of hardware, a ring or edge strip inserted into a hole through thin material like sheet metal, carbon fiber, or textile fabric. Grommets typically feature a flare or collar on each side to help keep them in place, and are typically made from metal, plastic, or rubber. Grommets are primarily used to prevent tearing or abrasion of the pierced material, or to protect wires, cables, or lines routed through the hole the grommet surrounds. Grommets used in shoes, tarps and sails are also referred to as eyelets, while grommets used in electrical applications are called insulating bushings.

FSG: Grommets fall under the Federal Supply Group FSG 53: Hardware and Abrasives.

FSC: Grommets fall under the Federal Supply Classification FSC 5325: Fastening Devices.

Common Applications

Grommets in aviation and marine applications are typically used to protect cabling and wires. Holes in metal or other hard materials typically have sharp edges, which can cut through wires and cabling and damage it. A protective grommet around the edge of the hole protects the wiring, and ensures proper functionality. In computer components, grommets are used to lessen vibration, such as when mounting shock-sensitive computer disk drives.
