The Fairchild Republic A-10 Warthog, otherwise known as the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, is an aircraft that undertakes operations such as fixed-wing close air support, forward air control, and ground-attack. The first flight of the Fairchild Republic A-10 series was in 1972, and since then there have been over 700 units produced to date. Currently, the United States Air Force remains the primary user of the model. The A-10 series was produced under an initiative of improving performance over the A-1 Skyraider with increased firepower. The airframe of the Fairchild Republic A-10 is composed of titanium armor that aids in the protection of the cockpit and critical aircraft systems from attack. Because of this armor, the A-10 is capable of receiving multiple hits and damages while continuing to operate.

The name “Warthog” serves as a nickname of the aircraft that was given by the USAF attack squadrons that maintained them. Because of this naming, some A-10s also have nose art in which warthog head features are depicted. Since their debut, the A-10 Warthog has been deployed for a variety of operations including Operation Anaconda, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Odyssey Dawn, and more. Currently, the A-10 Warthog is expected to remain in service until at least 2028, in which it may either continue to operate or be replaced with the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.
