Functionality of Coupling Nut: Coupling nuts are a kind of threaded fastener typically used to join two separate threaded rods or pipes together. Otherwise known as extension nuts, coupling nuts are typically hexagonal, making it easy to tighten the nut using a wrench. A male groove runs along the inside of the nut, which is accompanied by an additional groove on the outside of the rivet or threaded rod. When the two threads meet they form a secure connection, which can be tightened further either manually or with a tool. Because of their longer shape, coupling nuts are easily distinguished from other nuts. The size of the coupling refers to the thread diameter.
FSG: Coupling Nuts are categorized under FSG 53: Hardware and Abrasives.
FSC: Coupling Nuts categorized under FSC 5310:Nuts and Washers
Common Applications: In the construction industry coupling nuts are used to extend a rod by connecting two identical rods together. An alternative use for coupling nuts is to tighten two opposing components together to help construct a larger component. In aircraft coupling nuts are used to secure various components together therefore ensuring the overall airworthiness of the aircraft. Without the use of coupling nuts two components that are close together may generate friction as they slide past one another. Friction can be very damaging for an aircraft as the components experience wear and tear. Coupling nuts tightly secure two components together therefore eliminating friction. Corrosion-proofed coupling nuts are used in the landing gear of an aircraft and in the damper ram of a helicopter.
