Part #: EA-5174-9-CES
Part Type: Air Speed Indicator
Part Family: Pitot-Static Flight instrument
Manufacturer: Part number, EA-5174-9-CES is manufactured by Edo-Aire, a subsidiary of Textron Aviation.
Functionality of Air Speed Indicator: Airspeed indicators are either computerized or pitot-static instruments used to measure the airspeed of an aircraft. ASIs are crucial to the safe operation of an aircraft. Typically these types of indicators are analog systems that measures the dynamic air pressure from the pitot tube to the static pressure from the static port. In the pitot tube the static and dynamic pressure cancel each other out, leaving out the total measurement for dynamic pressure, or ram pressure. The air speed indicator is linked to the pitot static system. As the air accelerates, the increasing dynamic pressure fills up a pressure diaphragm with ram air, which is indicated by a needle on the indicator’s gauge face.
Airspeed indicators can usually color coded ranges or arcs that help the pilot operate the aircraft safely and efficiently. The markings depict crucial speeds such as normal flap operating range, which is indicated by a white arc. The speed of the aircraft is measured in knots or miles per hour. The newer, technologically advised indicators however, have a different depiction of airspeed and use modern sensor technology.
FSG: Air Speed Indicators are categorized under FSG 66: Instruments and Laboratory Equipment
FSC: Air Speed Indicators are categorized under FSC 6610: Flight Instruments
Common Applications: Every aircraft is fitted with an air speed indicator and is considered to be a key component inside the cockpit. On an older aircraft such as a Cessna Caravan pitot-static airspeed indicators are common. The pitot static air port is typically located under the wing where it is not affected by airflow during flight.
In newer, more modern aircraft such as commercial jets, the airspeed indicator could be GPS based or computerized. There are also different types of airspeed including indicated airspeed, calibrated airspeed, true airspeed, and groundspeed. The airspeed indicator provides the indicated airspeed, but it is important for the pilot to compare and be aware of the other airspeeds. At ASAP Aerospace, we have an industry-leading inventory of new and obsolete parts applicable within the aerospace industry.
