Functionality of Seals

Seals are used to prevent fluid, air, and dirt from passing a certain point or entering the systems in which they are used. Seals are divided into three main classes: packings, gaskets, and wipers. A seal can consist of more than one component, like an o-ring and anti-extrusion ring. Most seals are made from synthetic materials that are compatible with the fluids or contaminants they aim to take out. Seals that are not compatible tend to be prone to leaks and system malfunctions. The most common materials are rubber or elastomers.
