The Eurocopter AS 532 AL Cougar is a twin engine, medium weight military helicopter designed and manufactured by Eurocopter. The AS 532 AL is the militarized version of the upgraded and developed Aerospatiale SA 330 Puma. The civilian counterpart to the AS 532 AL is the Europcopter AS 332 Super Puma. The helicopter has been in production since 1990 and has a base price of USD $21 million. The AS 532 AL is the long version of the Cougar family, powered by two Turbomeca Makila 1A1 turboshaft engines. It carries a crew of two and can accommodate up to 29 troops or six injured passengers on stretches and ten more more passengers. Like other versions of the Cougar, the AS 532 AL can lift up to 4.5 tons of cargo via a sling. The utility version of the aircraft is equipped with the Horizon battlefield ground surveillance system, and its armed version can accommodate a wide range of weapons including pod-mounted 20mm cannons, 68 mm rocket-launchers, and side-mounted rapid fire machine guns.
