The Tiger is a four-bladed, twin-engined attack helicopter designed and manufactured by Eurocopter. It has been in production since 2003 and has a base price of 39 million dollars. Development of the Tiger began during the Cold War and it was initially intended to serve as an anti-tank helicopter in the event of a Soviet ground invasion of Western Europe. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Eurocopter went forth with the production of the Tiger, instead developing it into a multi-role attack helicopter. Despite mass production beginning in 2003, it did not achieve operational readiness until 2008.

The Tiger has the distinction of being the first fully composite helicopter developed in Europe. Even its earliest models incorporated advanced features such as a glass cockpit, stealth technology, and increased agility to bolster the aircraft’s survivability. Many variants and upgraded versions have since entered service, offering more powerful engines and compatibility with a broader scope of weaponry. The Tiger and its variants have been used in combat in Afghanistan, Libya, and Mali.

The Tiger is powered by two Rolls-Royce Turbomeca MTU MTR390 engines that provide 1,171 horsepower, allowing it to travel at a top speed of 170 knots for a maximum range of 432 nautical miles. It has a rate of climb of 2,105 feet per minute and a service ceiling of 13,000 feet. Its fuel tank capacity is 355 gallons and its fuel economy is 1.22 nautical miles per gallon. Four variants/upgrades of the Tiger exist: the UH Tiger, Tiger HAP, Tiger HAD, and Tiger ARH. Comparable aircraft include the Agusta A129 Mangusta, Bell AH-1 SuperCobra, Boeing AH-64 Apache, and more.

Eurocopter (now known as Airbus Helicopters), the manufacturer of the Tiger, is the helicopter manufacturing division of Airbus. The company is a leading producer of civil helicopters and the most prolific manufacturer in the industry in terms of revenue and turbine helicopter deliveries. Airbus Helicopters provides helicopter spare parts, tools, and ground support equipment to civil, commercial, and military aircraft. The company’s main production facility and headquarters are at Marseille Provence Airport in Marignane, France, and a second main production facility is in Donauworth, Germany. Additional production plants are in Brazil, Australia, Spain, Romania, and the United States.
