The Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King is a twin-engined helicopter designed and developed by American aircraft manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft. As the world’s first amphibious helicopter, the SH-3 Sea King serves use for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and utility applications. Development of the Sea King began in order to create a means of countering Soviet submarines during the Cold War, and thus the Sea King was engineered to serve for anti-submarine warfare with an accommodating platform. Production of the Sea King began in 1959 and led into the 1970’s before manufacturing ceased, and over 1,300 units were built in total. While the United States Navy has retired the rotorcraft, units still remain in active service across the globe for many operators.
