The 728 aircraft were powered by two
General Electric CF34-10D engines that provide 18,500 pounds of force, allowing the aircraft to travel at a top speed of 535 knots (615 mph) for a maximum range of 1,925 miles. It had a fuel tank capacity of 6,303 gallons and a fuel economy of roughly 0.35 nautical miles per gallon. The service ceiling of the 728 Family was 37,000 feet. Variants of the 728 include the 928, 1128, 528, and the Envoy 7. Comparable aircraft include the Airbus A320, Boeing 737, Bombardier CRJ, Embraer E-Jet, and more.
Fairchild Dornier, the manufacturer of the 728 Family, is an American aircraft and aerospace manufacturing company. The company was founded in 1925 by Sherman Fairchild and was the first American company to produce an aircraft with a fully enclosed cockpit and
hydraulic landing gear. The company primarily produced civilian aircraft until World War II, when Fairchild developed training aircraft, transports, and drones for the U.S. war effort. In addition to aircraft, Fairchild produced a variety of missiles and other defense products for the U.S. military. In 1996, Fairchild acquired Dornier and became Fairchild Dornier. The company is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense company.
