Part Family: Electronics/Instruments

Manufacturers: Vertical Speed Indicators are manufactured by Thales Group, Hitachi, Dale Aviation, Signetics, Vishay, and many others.

Functionality of Vertical Speed Indicators:

A Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI) is an instrument used to indicate the rate at which an aircraft is climbing or descending. VSIs use the pitot-static system of an aircraft to determine the vertical speed and projects the result on a circular scale instrument with a needle. Simple VSIs feature a barometric capsule contained in a sealed case. The capsule receives pressure throughout the pitot tube system, meanwhile the case is connected via a calibrated nozzle. This nozzle restricts the airflow causing a time delay between a change in static pressure and the pressure within the case. When the aircraft climbs, the pressure in the case decreases, causing the needle on the instrument to move.

FSG: Vertical Speed Indicators are categorized under FSG 59: Electrical and Electronic Equipment Components

FSC: Brackets are categorized under FSG 5998: Electrical and Electronic assemblies, Board, Cards, and Associate Hardware

Common Applications:

Vertical Speed Indicators are used in aircraft to denote the rate at which an aircraft is increasing or decreasing in altitude.
