The Eurocopter AS355 is a mid-size helicopter designed and manufactured by Eurocopter. The AS355 has been in production since 1975 and has a base price of USD $3.6 million. Development of the AS355 began in 1970 to replace the Alouette II, with the prototype’s first flight taking place on June 27, 1974. Mass production and deliveries began in 1978. A twin engine version known as the Ecureuil 2 (marketed in North America as the TwinStar) was first flown in 1979. Despite the introduction of newer models, the AS355 remains popular to this day.
