At the end of last month, CIT Aerospace awarded GE Aviation a USD$200 million contract to provide GEnx-1B engines for its four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. CIT Aerospace is one of the major aircraft leasing businesses with a fleet of more than 350 commercial aircraft, which serves approximately 100 customers across 50 countries. These new engines will put CIT's GEnx-1B-powered Boeing 787 fleet at a total of seven aircraft.
"The GEnx-powered Boeing 787 aircraft has proven itself with outstanding fuel burn and reliability, and we are pleased to add four more GEnx-powered aircraft to our leasing fleet,” said Tony Diaz, CIT Commercial Air president in a statement about the contract.
GE Aviation global sales and marketing vice-president and general manager Chaker Chahrour also released a statement:
"The GEnx-1B engine is the leading engine of choice for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The selection by CIT for additional GEnx-powered Boeing 787 aircraft is a testament to the engine's outstanding performance."
This GEnx engine will reportedly improve fuel efficiency by nearly 15% more than the CF6 model. According to GE, the engine’s twin annular pre-swirl (TAPS) combustor will reduce regulated gas emissions by as much as 90% and will reduce nitrogen emissions by 55%. This new engine is also the quietest in GE’s range due to the slower tip speed on the fan blades. The GEnx program is managed in collaboration with Sweden's Volvo Aero, Japan-based IHI, TechSpace Aero (Safran), MTU of Germany, Snecma (Safran Group), and Samsung Techwin of Korea.
