The dawn of modern commercial aviation came in 1926 with the introduction of the Air Commerce Act of 1926. This act created an aeronautics branch of the United States Department of Commerce that served to maintain the aviation industry through testing and licensing of pilots, certification of aircraft, and creation of safety standards and protocols. Prior to this act, aviation in the United states was largely unregulated.
This was the era of the ‘barnstormer,’ pilots who flew throughout the United States selling aircraft rides, and performing stunts. It was the first major form of civil aviation, due to the surplus of aircraft that remained after the mass-production during World War I. The U.S. Military sold off the many extra planes, allowing servicemen and civilians alike to snatch up high-quality aircraft. However, the lack of regulation inevitably led to more accidents and generally inhibited the safety of air travel. These publicized incidents turned out to be a driving force in the initiative to improve airline safety. Though commercial jet travel would not come into existence for some time still, the introduction of this landmark act paved the way for the wildly successful commercial aviation industry that still takes to the sky every single day.
