Part Family: Hardware

Manufacturers: Bushings are manufactured by Piper Aircraft Inc, Airbus Helicopters Inc, Raytheon Company, Socata Aircraft, Lycoming Turbine, Hawker Beechcraft, and Mark Controls Corp.

Functionality of Bushings: Otherwise known as plain bearings, bushings are small hardware pieces that are used to reduce friction between two components. Unlike other bearings, bushing don’t have a rolling element, instead comprising of just a singular bearing surface. Bushings are placed in between two components that rub past one another, thus causing friction between the two surface areas. Friction is a less than desirable occurence in aircraft as it causes costly wear and tear on key components. To mitigate friction, a bushing is placed in between two moving or stationary components to absorb the friction. Bushing are typically made out of shock-absorbing rubber, which allows for a certain amount of movement to occur between the two elements.

Common Applications of Bushings: Bushings have a variety of applications in both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. They are used in the main rotor axes of helicopters and in the landing gear of fixed-wing aircraft. Due to the environments in which they are typically placed, bushing must be made out of a durable material. Bushings used on any type of aircraft need to be corrosion resistant, be able to withstand drastic temperature changes, and strong enough to absorb large amounts of friction. In automobiles bushings are typically found in the suspension system.
