Functionality of Pinion Gears: In general, gears can mesh teeth and are used to transmit rotary motion from one shaft to another shaft. Pinion gears more specifically, are used to convert rotation motion into linear motion. When a person drives the pinion into rotation, it causes the rack to be driven linearly. As a result of driving the rack linearly, it will cause the pinion to be driven into a rotation.

Common Applications:

Pinion gears convert rotating movement into linear motion. There are some applications where the gear rack is stationary. A great example of its application would be when we use the steering wheel of our car. The steering wheel rotates a gear which engages the rack. The steering wheel rotates a gear which engages the rack. As the gear turns, it slides the rack either to the right or left, depending on which way you turn the wheel.
