Functionality of Shims:

A Shim is a thin, usually tapered, material used to fill small gaps or spaces between two objects. They are usually used to support, provide a better fit, or level a surface. In some cases shims are used to fill gaps between objects to prevent them from wearing. Common shims can be made from a variety of materials but are typically composed of wood, stone, plastic, metal, or even paper. Aerospace specific shims come from carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, aluminum, titanium, and others.
