The Cirrus SR20 is a general aviation monoplane that is constructed from composite materials. Designed and developed by Cirrus Aircraft since 1999, over 1,332 units have been produced as of 2016. The SR20 had its first flight in 1995, and in 1998 the aircraft received FAA certification. At the time of its release, the SR20 served as one of the first of its class to receive FAA Part 23 certification in a number of years. The SR20 also stands apart from many other aircraft, being the only in its class to have side stick flight controls that maintain some aspects of a conventional yoke handle.
With a single Continental IO-360-ES engine producing 200 horsepower, the Cirrus SR20 can reach a maximum cruise speed of 156 knots. For flight operations, the SR20 features a fuel economy of 32.98 nautical miles per gallon, greatly outperforming many other similar aircraft. Up to five passengers may also be situated within the main cabin, and a Garmin Cirrus Perspective glass cockpit and avionics aid the pilot in operation. While the SR20 serves as a popular trainer for a number of facilities across the globe, military operators such as the French Air Force and the United States Air Force Academy also utilize the aircraft for their own flight training.
