Epic Aircraft Prototype set to make First Flight

Epic Aircraft’s E1000 prototype has successfully completed its first test flight, setting the course for the company to begin deliveries. The aircraft, valued at $2.95 million, should ready for delivery in the next year. The Oregonian manufacturers completed a big step towards getting certification for their single-engine turboprop with their successful maiden voyage. The aim of the project is to have it be the fastest single engine civil aircraft in the world. The first successful flight for the plane nicknamed “FT1” took place on December 19th at Bend Municipal Airport in Deschutes County. Chief Pilot David Robinson took it for a twenty minute test run, and gave it a glowing review. The experienced flyer reported that it handled extremely well, just as he expected it to. Officials at Epic were just as delighted to meet their deadline of getting the plane off the ground by the end of the year.

This is a tremendous accomplishment, and I couldn't be more proud of our team," said Epic CEO Doug King. "We achieved our goal to fly FT1 by the end of the year, thanks to the hard work, long hours and dedicated commitment of our entire staff.

Epic’s E1000 offers a “jet-class performance” powered by its 1200 HP Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67A engine. The aircraft can ascend at a rate of 3,000 feet per minute while fully loaded, with a maximum ceiling of 34,000 feet. It also boasts a range of greater than 1,650 nautical miles carrying a payload of over 1,120 pounds fully fueled. The spacious interior will remind pilots and passengers of a luxury car. FT1 testing will continue over the next several months, assessing general handling qualities, operational performance, systems operations in normal mode, failure scenarios, extreme conditions and Flight into Known Icing (FIKI) requirements.
