Monetary and other terms of the contract were not disclosed at the time. The system is a spectrally matched aircraft countermeasure, and was chosen by the Air Force because of how well it tested in a performance against infrared missile threats. It will be used as a crucial piece to keep aircraft protected, and allow them to survive longer.
Orbital ATK is an experienced builder of rocket propulsion technology. They are known to have some of the best infrared-countering technology around, and are continuing to improve it. Officials at the company explained that it works by “distracting” the missiles headed for the aircraft, and diverting their path elsewhere.
“Leveraging Orbital ATK’s expertise in solid rocket propulsion has enabled us to develop highly reliable and advanced countermeasures such as the MJU-73/B,”
said Charlie Precourt, Vice President and General Manager of Orbital ATK’s Propulsion Systems Division.
“These sophisticated pyrotechnic devices protect the warfighter by mimicking the ‘heat’ signature of an aircraft to lure infrared missiles away.”
Orbital ATK went on to add that they will continue to evolve and develop new technology, in the name of protecting America’s warfighting aircraft. They want the MJU-73/B to be the standard of what everything else is measured against going forward.
Also noted in a $23.6m contract from the Air Force, Orbital ATK is responsible for launching the ORS-5 SensorSat spacecraft using a rocket from its Minotaur launch vehicle family.
Orbital ATK developed the system entirely with their own funds. They research, design, build, and deliver defense systems for customers all over the globe, be it space or aviation. Their solutions are used both for government and commercial customers. Launch vehicles, missile products, and defense electronics are just a few things they can supply to those who need them.
