The World-Famous Black Hawk Helicopter
Since the company’s creation in 1925, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp
. has become a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of military and commercial helicopters; fixed-wing aircraft; spare parts and maintenance, repair and overhaul services for helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft; and civil helicopter operations. Although they handle commercial aircrafts, Sikorsky’s forte is production for the military. What do all five branches of the United States armed forces have in common? Sikorsky Helicopters. You may have heard of the famous U.S. Military helicopters dubbed the SeaHawk and the world famous Black Hawk. What you might not have known is that these 2 famous aircrafts are based on the Sikorsky H-60 aircraft. Sikorsky is the prime contractor in the U.S. Army's UH-60M aircraft program, which the Pentagon authorized for full rate production on June 26, 2007. In 2010, the U.S. Navy's helicopter fleet became all-Sikorsky with the MH-60S helicopter and the MH-60R helicopter the only air platforms used. Sikorsky Aircraft also excels in non-combative, rescue aircrafts.
Staying true to Igor Sikorsky’s mission statement, "We pioneer flight solutions that bring people home everywhere...every timeTM." Sikorsky helicopters have saved an estimated 2 million lives, which includes the very first helicopter rescue in 1944.Despite their impressive feats, Sikorsky continues to innovate and challenge the current state of aviation. For example, on 3/11/2014, Sikorsky Aircraft successfully demonstrated an optionally piloted Black Hawk helicopter that can provide the commander with the flexibility to determine crewed or un-crewed operations. Also on 7/11/2014, Sikorsky, along with Boeing, was selected to help develop the Joint Common Architecture (JCA) standard for the U.S. Army’s Joint Multi-Role (JMR) Science and Technology program which is the ‘digital backbone’ through which mission systems will be seamlessly integrated into the Future Vertical Lift (FVL) system’s design.
