Airbus Develops Counter-UAV System

Airbus Defense and Space has recently developed a new Counter-UAV systems capable of detecting and hijacking intruding Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The Counter UAV combines sensor data with signal analysis and jamming technologies to provide electronic countermeasures over ranges of up to 10 km. Using infrared cameras and direction finders, the Counter-UAV system detects intruding UAVs and can even locate the user to arrest them. Airbus has included a new jamming system within the Counter-UAV, which allows jamming signals to only intercept the relevant frequencies. Via Smart Response Jamming Technology developed by Airbus Defence and Space, the relevant frequencies are jammed while other frequencies within the range remain operational.

The Counter UAV essentially disrupts communication between the UAV and its user. Other features include remote control classification, GPS spoofing, and both receiving and transmitting capabilities. Airbus Defence and Space has pulled from its extensive portfolio of operational radars, directional finders, and infrared cameras to make this Counter-UAV one of the most effective on the market. Thomas Müller, head of the Electronics business line at Airbus Defence and Space, had the following to say about the new Counter UAV:

Over the past several year, Airbus tested their Counter UAV extensively. That being said, commercially available Counter-UAV systems could be seen as early as mid-2016. The explosion of drone usage over the past few years has more than warranted the development of new counter-UAV devices, and Airbus Defense and Space is certainly up to the challenge of creating an effective product.
